Middle School Academics
Our middle school teachers understand that middle school students are experiencing enormous cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. Therefore, the middle school is designed to meet those unique needs.
Cognitive:
Core Classes: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.
Students have the opportunity to advance a year in mathematics and language arts classes. This would afford them the opportunity to take the Literature Keystone and/or the Algebra I Keystone during their 8th grade year. Of course, this then allows for this student to select from a number of exciting Academic Pathways offered at GJHS, including the Associates Degree Program (earning an Associates Degree while in High School).
Cycle Classes: Art, Physical Education, Technology, Character Education, Music, and Computers.
Within the cycle classes, students have the opportunity to participate in Chorus, Orchestra, and Band.
Social/Emotional:
School Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (SWPBIS)
This program promotes having a Positive Attitude, being Respectful, being Involved, being Dependable, and having Empathy (P.R.I.D.E.).
Character Development - Through PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) and Botvin LifeSkills programs.
Advisement
Provides every student with a personal adult advocate through organized, structured effort that connects students to a career goal, as well as, a high school and post-secondary program of study, necessary for acquiring the knowledge and skills to succeed in the 21st Century.
Physical:
All middle school students participate in physical education and have opportunities to join extracurricular teams.
